Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing modality that is becoming increasingly popular in the west as we move towards a more integrated approach to healthcare. Ayurvedic medicine focuses on the physical, emotional and mental aspects of a health in a holistic way.
A sister science to yoga, ayurveda emerged from the sacred texts of ancient India, known as the vedas, or “books of wisdom.” Although these texts date back at least five thousand years, ayurvedic practices are as relevant today as they were 5000 years ago because they are based on the cycles of nature.
Central to ayurveda is the notion that a human being is made up of three basic energetic vibrations that permeate our mental, physical and psychological health. These are known as doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They govern all physical and mental processes and provide every living being with an individual blueprint for health and fulfillment. Each of us is perfectly created with our own unique balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The ratio of the doshas is different for each person and the goal of ayurveda is to bring the doshas into balance according to each person’s constitution.
We have blended our essential oil combinations in accordance with these principles and said to balance:
Vata (air): dry and dehydrated skin, joint pain, cold hands, excessive thining, sleep disturbance and an ungrounded mental state my indicate an excess of vata
Pitta (fire): hot red palms, sensitive skin prone to irritation, quick thinking and hot temper may indicate an excess of pitta
Kapha (water): thick oily skin, lethargy, lack of motivation, excessive sleep and melancholy may indicate an excess of Kapha
